What notable landmark can still be seen in Madrone?

Long before Morgan Hill was incorporated, Madrone was part of the Burnett Township, named for California's first governor, Peter H. Burnett. Early settlers, including Martin Murphy Sr., Captain William Fisher, and William Tennant, established ranches that shaped the southern Santa Clara Valley. Daniel Murphy planted Madrone's first orchard, beginning the area's rich agricultural tradition. In 1958, Madrone was annexed into the City of Morgan Hill.

Originally a stage stop along El Camino Real, Madrone grew into a thriving community with a hotel, saloon, blacksmith shop, general store, post office, and other businesses. When the railroad arrived in 1869, local farmers began shipping prunes, apricots, and grapes throughout California. The community, originally named Sherman, officially became Madrone in 1882 to match the nearby Madrone Mineral Springs resort.

Madrone's history includes notable landmarks and industries. The 116-foot water tower, built in 1942, overlooks the former Cribari & Sons Winery. The Cochrane family established one of California's finest dairy ranches, supplying butter and cheese to San Francisco and giving Cochrane Road its name. Burnett School, founded in 1855, was the first school between San Jose and Gilroy and served generations of local families.

Following World War II, Sutter Field Airport operated as a private airfield on Cochrane Road until its closure in 1980.  During its operation, the Morgan Hill Airmen’s Association leased the land from Sutter, who eventually sold the property to the Wiltron Corp. Additionally, the area was well-known for hosting the annual Madrone Rodeo from 1934 to 1941, a major national attraction  that drew competitors and spectators from all across the country.

Today, Madrone remains an important part of Morgan Hill's heritage, reflecting the region's agricultural roots, transportation history, and enduring community spirit.
